Oracle acquires Xsigo to address networking and cloud gaps
August 7, 2012
Oracle tries to capitalize on news of VMware's acquisition of Nicira, but I/O virtualization is not the same as SDN. Coming quickly on the heels of VMware's announced purchase plans of Nicira, Oracle a week later brought news of its own: The company is buying network I/O virtualization vendor Xsigo Systems for an undisclosed sum, though the price tag should be far less than VMware's handsome offer of $1.26 billion made for Nicira.

Oracle chugs down I/O virtualising Xsigo
July 30, 2012
Oracle has bought data centre fabric virtualisation start-up Xsigo for who knows how many bucks. Xsigo was founded in 2004, and its products connect servers and networked devices across an InfiniBand fabric based on I/O Director hardware. This is virtualised, so servers operate as if they have a normal, ordinary connection to a storage array or a network port. With I/O virtualisation, network connections can be dynamically moved between servers, removing cable clutter and making a server-storage-network system more responsive to events and better able to optimise its resources to respond to them.

Oracle Buys Xsigo to Untangle Data Center Networks
July 30, 2012
Oracle has agreed to acquire virtual networking company Xsigo Systems. The software giant announced the deal on Monday, but terms of the deal were not disclosed. Although comparisons with VMware’s $1.26 billion acquisition of Nicira are inevitable, Xsigo actually makes a very different type of product. Whereas Nicira offers a tool that lets you build entire computer networks using nothing but software, Xsigo sells a simpler product called Data Centre Fabric (DCF), which is specifically designed to virtualize network cards and connections, reducing the amount of physical hardware and network cabling required to run a network of virtual machines.

Oracle Acquires Xsigo: Will It Deliver 'Pleasant Surprises'?
July 30, 2012
In February I interviewed the CEO of Xsigo, Lloyd Carney, and I was mighty impressed by what he had accomplished. Today, Oracle (ORCL) decided that Xsigo was worth buying. What is Oracle getting for its money? In a nutshell, Xsigo has a dagger aimed at Cisco (CSCO)’s business and Oracle is getting a way to take a piece of its market share. When I talked with Carney, he thought Xsigo would be a good acquisition for someone it turns out that someone was Larry Ellison.

Software Defined Everything: Oracle to Acquire Xsigo

Another morning and another announcement that yet another so called “Software defined Networking” (SDN) company will be acquired. This time it’s Oracle‘s turn, announcing the acquisition of Xsigo. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The deal is expected to go through in the fall, subject to closing conditions.

July 30, 2012
Just last week VMware Inc. picked up Palo-Alto, Calif.-based NiciraNetworks Inc. in an effort to bolster its networking virtualization capabilities, which had the added affect of pitting VMware against Cisco Systems Inc. Mercury NewsInterview: Lloyd Carney, CEO of Xsigo Systems (pdf)
April 7, 2012
It's a little-known company with an oddly-spelled name. But CEO Lloyd Carney is convinced that San Jose-based Xsigo Systems is changing the way data centers work. Xsigo (pronounced See-Go) uses virtualization software to reduce the number of physical cables and switches needed to carry data between servers and other hardware in big computer centers. It works by increasing the traffic volume on individual cables, in the way companies like VMware use virtualization to run more than one operating system and multiple processes on a single computer.
